In order to help our participants understand expectations and improve their interactions, we developed the Green Light Behavior Management System. This system gives participants visual feedback on their performance during group activities.
When a participant is on a Green Light, he is following the rules and having appropriate interactions with others. When a participant is on a Yellow Light, he is struggling with the rules and has had an inappropriate interaction with someone, but there is still an opportunity to change the behavior. When a participant is on Red Light, he has refused to follow the rules, has had several inappropriate interactions, and did not change behavior with staff redirection. Ability Specialists mentors inform participants of their status throughout the day. We use rewards and consequences to help reinforce positive behaviors and keep participants on the right track.
The Green Light program works the best for Tara. She's proud of herself when she receives a green star. If she does get a yellow or red we talk about why, and she is motivated to change her behavior.- Carolyn Armstrong, Parent
