Ability Specialists believes we can mentor individuals with developmental disabilities in order to enrich their lives and provide a foundation they can carry with them for a lifetime. We aim to facilitate the development of a well-rounded human being who will be successful in all areas of life.

The goal of the Ability Specialists' Volunteer Work Adjustment Day Program is to provide integral skills for adults who want to contribute in a work environment but lack the necessary skills to do so. We provide the venue for them to develop real job skills that can help them obtain independent or supported employment in the community.

As with all of our programs, our participants are integrated into the community. This is a vital element to their holistic growth and development. Through this program we have witnessed participants’ social and emotional growth as they have learned to understand boundaries and natural consequences in the context of daily life situations—boosting each individual's self-esteem in the process. The Volunteer Day Program also teaches teamwork, how to take direction, and how to and work well with others, along with other skills like:

  • Self-esteem building
  • Developing a core sense of security
  • Being comfortable with one's abilities and disabilities
  • Learning respect for self and others
  • Understanding natural consequences
  • Learning and understanding personal and professional boundaries
  • Necessary work place preparedness

We volunteer at different locations each day, working in groups of five to seven volunteers, Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We partner with organizations that recognize and value our participants as viable, contributing members of society. Some of our volunteer duties include:

  • Food service
  • Sorting and Inventory
  • Customer service
  • Landscaping
