More Than a Service: Building a Sanctuary Through Trauma-Informed Care
At Ability Specialists, our mission is built on a simple but profound belief: Every person deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported.
For many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), life has included chapters of stress or trauma. Recognizing this isn't just about being "kind"—it’s about providing effective, professional care. That is why we utilize Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and the Sanctuary Model to guide every interaction we have.
A Shift in Perspective
The core of trauma-informed care is a shift in the questions we ask. Instead of looking at a challenging moment and asking, "What is wrong with this person?" we pause and ask, "What may have happened to this person, and how can we support them right now?"
This perspective allows our team to see past a "behavior" and see the human who is trying to communicate a need or navigate a memory.
The S.E.L.F. Framework
To ensure this philosophy isn't just a "nice idea" but a lived reality, we use the Sanctuary Model’s S.E.L.F. framework. This helps our staff and members navigate growth through four key lenses:
| Pillar | What It Means In Practice |
|---|---|
| Safety | Creating spaces where individuals feel physically and emotionally secure. |
| Emotional Management | Learning to recognize and navigate big feelings in healthy, supportive ways. |
| Loss | Acknowledging and supporting people through life changes, transitions, or past hurts. |
| Future | Building hope, setting personal goals, and creating a path toward independence. |
Why This Matters
When we prioritize safety and dignity, we see real growth. We see individuals who were once hesitant start to take lead roles in their own lives. We see community inclusion that isn't just about "being there," but about belonging.
Our commitment to you—and to every member we serve—is to keep safety, choice, and personal growth at the center of everything we do.
