A New Way to Support Growth at Ability Specialists

One of the absolute best parts of working at Ability Specialists is watching the incredible growth that happens when people are met with the right opportunities, tools, and genuine encouragement.

As our programs continue to expand, our team is always looking for better ways to truly understand each person’s unique strengths, long-term goals, and the specific areas where they want to build confidence. That is why we are so excited to introduce a new category to our blog, our Service Spotlight, starting with the launch of our new Comprehensive Skills Assessment for the individuals we serve.

We want to be entirely clear right from the start: this assessment is not about passing or failing. It is simply about getting a clearer, more holistic picture of where someone is today so we can design the best roadmap to help them get where they want to go tomorrow.

The Four Core Areas of Growth

The assessment looks closely at four key areas of life that we know are essential for long-term independence, meaningful employment, and vibrant community involvement.

  • Work Skills: Whether a participant is preparing for their very first job or building on years of volunteer experience, we look at the foundational habits that lead to success. This includes following workplace routines, staying on task, independent problem-solving, adapting to unexpected changes, and collaborating effectively with a team.

  • Daily Living Skills: Independence looks completely different for everyone. We assess practical, daily responsibilities like personal care, managing personal schedules, utilizing community transportation, money management, and household tasks that support a person’s individual lifestyle goals.

  • Social and Communication Skills: Relationships and self-expression play a massive role in how we experience the world. This section focuses on how individuals navigate social situations, build meaningful friendships, advocate clearly for their personal needs, and safely engage with neighbors and businesses in their local communities.

  • Self-Management and Self-Advocacy Skills: Our ultimate goal is for every participant to feel confident making their own decisions and speaking up for themselves. We look at emotional regulation, personal goal setting, self-awareness, and the self-advocacy tools that foster deep, long-term confidence.

Why We Are Focused on Strengths, Not Deficits

Too often in traditional disability services, paperwork and evaluations focus entirely on what a person cannot do. At Ability Specialists, we want to completely flip that script. We choose to focus heavily on what people can do, what they love doing, and exactly where they want to grow.

This new assessment will allow our staff to create highly individualized goals, celebrate real progress, target new areas for skill-building, and ensure that the daily support we provide genuinely reflects each person's unique needs and aspirations.

We believe that real growth happens both inside and outside of our standard programming. Because of that, these goals are designed to reflect the whole person and can easily encompass areas of life that stretch far beyond our building.

Moving Forward Together

We believe the absolute best outcomes come through steady, open collaboration. We warmly welcome the feedback, ideas, concerns, and input of our participants, families, guardians, case managers, and support teams. Together, we can create meaningful goals that help individuals build the skills and independence needed to live the exact life they want.

We are excited to begin piloting this new assessment process throughout July and August, and we look forward to seeing the positive, lasting impact it will have on our participants and their support networks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this assessment mandatory for all current participants? We are beginning with a small pilot group during July and August to refine the process and ensure it is a smooth, positive experience. Our goal is to eventually weave this helpful tool into our standard onboarding and annual review processes to give everyone a clearer roadmap for growth.

How long does the assessment take, and will it disrupt daily activities? Not at all. The assessment is designed to be conversational, observational, and completely stress-free. Our staff will gather information naturally during regular programming, routines, and community outings over a period of a couple of weeks, so it will never feel like a rigid test for the participant.

How can families and case managers contribute to the assessment? Your insight is invaluable to us. We will provide structured opportunities for parents, guardians, and case managers to share their observations, goals, and any areas of concern. We want to make sure the goals we set at Ability Specialists align beautifully with the goals you have for your loved one at home and in the community.
