Fashion Designed for the Individual: Ability Specialists Partners with RMCAD

Over the past eight weeks, Ability Specialists had the privilege of partnering with students from the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Designon an inspiring pilot project that brought together creativity, accessibility, and person-centered design.

Throughout the program, RMCAD students spent time getting to know Ability Specialists participants. They learned about each person’s individual style, interests, preferences, and accessibility needs before designing and creating customized fashion pieces specifically for them.

The experience gave the student designers an opportunity to apply their skills in a meaningful, real-world setting. At the same time, Ability Specialists participants were active collaborators in the creative process. Their personalities, ideas, and needs guided each design.

The project concluded with a fashion show at Ability Specialists, where participants had the opportunity to model their personalized clothing and celebrate the finished designs.

More than a fashion project, this collaboration demonstrated what becomes possible when design begins with listening. Clothing can be creative and expressive while also supporting comfort, movement, accessibility, and independence.

The project also provided opportunities for participants to practice communication, self-expression, decision-making, and confidence. Most importantly, it celebrated each person as an individual with a unique sense of style.
